Doctor of Philosophy in Physics

The Physics department aims to graduate distinguished bachelor's, master's, and Ph.D. graduates and provide them with the skills that qualify them to work in various disciplines and fields

Admission Requirements

1- The applicant must have a Master of Science in Physics with a grade of no less than Very Good.
2- The applicant must have passed the IELTS language test with a score of no less than (5) or its equivalent from other tests TOFEL or STEP. An exception to this is those who obtained a master’s degree at a university whose official language is English.
3- The applicant must pass the test prepared by the department with a score of no less than 70%.
4- The applicant must pass the personal interview.
5- The exact specialization in the program is determined after passing the first academic year according to the department’s capabilities.

Mission:
Innovation and excellence in higher education and scientific research in the fields of physics delivering a qualified graduate in academia and research who contributes to scientific research and sustainable community services and development.

Objectives:
1.    Acquire a rigorous new knowledge and a firm understanding of physics. 
2.    Develop required skills to conduct independent research in physics and become leader in the chosen career.
3.    Foster abilities to identify, formulate, and solve challenging scientific and technical problems encountered in physics academic, research, and industry fields. 
4.    Gain proficiency in reading the scientific literature and in communicating scientific findings in both oral and written forms.
5.    Demonstrate original and profound contributions to knowledge in the related physics disciplines.
6.    Extend expertise and competence in physics to postgraduate students to prepare them for advanced study and research in physics and/or for employment.
7.    Provide scientific knowledge, laboratory experience, training, and critical thinking required as the basis for advanced study for students majoring in Physics.
8.    Participate in the realisation of national development plans and the objectives outlined in the Kingdom's vision 2030.
9.    Localization of contemporary research in physics in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia leading to implementation of Saudi modern industries independency in alignment with the Kingdom's vision 2030.

Learning Outcomes:
Knowledge and understanding:
1.    Define basic and advanced scientific knowledge, facts, and concepts in physics and related fields.
2.    Relate knowledge and understanding of recent developments, emerging topics, and challenges in one or more disciplines in physics.
3.    Identify and explore on going advanced knowledge from conducting genuine research and intellectual activities significantly contributing to impacting one or more disciplines in physics.
4.    Recognize and identify considerable and advanced knowledge and understanding of core and modern physics.
5.    State recent theories and scientific techniques in physics and methods of verification.

Skills:
1.    Implement highly advanced research or scientific investigation methodologies to initiate pioneer knowledge that profoundly contributes to different physics disciplines.
2.    Use diverse tools resolve challenges in highly complex settings in different physics disciplines.
3.    Disseminate and advance knowledge and new ideas, and pursuit scientific and professional discussion and debate with colleagues. 
4.    Exercise unconventional and advanced procedures, techniques, tools, instruments, and materials to deal with highly sophisticated, emerging, and challenging practical activities in different physics fields.
5.    Apply advanced mathematical and practical skills in physics to analyze, evaluate, and interpret scientific data.
