The saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons present in air as a result of different chemical industries or combustion processes. These gases can be found in the exhaust gases of automobiles and as a result of combustion of natural gas in power plants. The hydrocarbon gases are considered serious air pollutants and one of the reasons of the global warming. Those gases have serious effect on human lungs and can destroy the central nervous system upon long exposure.   On the way to purify air from those gases, a research team, consists of Doctor Mohamed Hamdy in the Department of Chemistry and Professor Doctor Guido Mul at Twente University, the Netherlands, has prepared a new photocatalyst, which can eliminate short-chain hydrocarbon gases. The study is aimed to eliminate a mixture of methane, ethane, and propane as saturated hydrocarbons, and ethylene and propylene as unsaturated hydrocarbons. The experimental results have showed that 70% of the gases has been totally degraded within an area of only 6 cm2. These results open a new route to investigate further the total elimination of harmful gases to the environment.

Jazan is considered among the most productive fishing areas in Saudi Arabia, because there are about 50 edible fish species for human consumption out of more than 250 varieties; thus, it is considered the third-largest port with a total length of 250 km coastline on the Red Sea. Moreover, Jazan is a residential area with a high density of many industrial and agricultural activities. Nevertheless, there are not enough environmental published studies about that important region.   A research team in the Department of Chemistry; consist of Proffesor Tarek Said, Doctor Ahmed Omran, Doctor Khaled Fawy, and Doctor Abubakr Idris; has conducted, for the first time, a monitoring study to evaluate some of the heavy metal levels in commercially important fish species consumed locally. After collecting many fish samples from different fisheries in Jazan (Red Sea coasts) and conducting the necessary chemical analysis through many chemical equipments, the research team has found that the concentrations of Ni, Cu, Zn, and Cd are within the detection limit for all samples, whereas the concentrations of Co, Cr, are Pb are less than the detection limit of the used instrument. Moreover, the research team has confirmed, through Target Hazard Quotient (THQ) method, that those fish species are safe for human being consumption in weekly basis with the exception of the concentration of Cd in some fish species. In addition, a comparison between the observed levels of heavy metals with similar levels of World Records has been done. It has been found that the current levels were ≤ levels established by the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization for human consumption of fish, with some exceptions.

Doctor Fethi Maiz, an associate professor in the Department of Physics, has published a book entitled “Quantum Mechanics (I)” at Lambert Academic Publishing. This book is a coherent sequence of Quantum Mechanics lecture notes for undergraduate and graduate students. The order of the book chapters is well organized with increasing difficulties; such that, each chapter is rich in detailed calculations for the topic under consideration. This book assumes that the students are well aware of many physical phenomena, such as, black body radiation, photoelectric effect, Compton effect, theory of relativity, and Bohr's model of the hydrogen atom.   The contents of this book are covered in one semester according to the following sequence: Introduction and recall math Establishment of the Schrödinger equation The free particle Quantum well infinite Finished quantum well Potential barrier and quantum tunneling Linear potential Harmonic oscillator: The algebraic method harmonic oscillator: The analytical method The potential Dirac Postulates of quantum mechanics Quantum box The Schrödinger equation in 3D Numerical methods.   This book enhances the student ability to: Write correctly the Schrödinger equation in many complicated cases Solve the Schrödinger equation problem and apply correctly the conditions of continuity of the wavefunction and its normalization Apply a numerical method such as the Numerov’s one, asymptotic iteration or the Airy function approach to study systems without accurate solutions Interpret these results and verify it.
